Abstract Shapes

1. Create a New 500x500 image with a White Background. Set you Foreground color to Black and your Background color to the following Gradient.

Settings used:

  • Gradient = Metal steel
  • Style = Linear
  • Angle = 90
  • Repeats = 0
  • Invert = Unchecked.

Press H to activate the Symetric Shape Tool. Enter these settings in the Tool Options palette.

Settings used:

  • Mode = Draw Stellated
  • Create on Vector = Checked
  • Number of sides = 4
  • Radius = 38
  • Width = 1
  • Anti-alias = Checked

Draw the shape in any size on the canvas. Right-click and choose "Convert to path". (If Convert to path is greyed out, it means the shape has already been converted to a path.) Press V to activate the Pen Tool. (Check the Tool Options palette to make sure you are in Edit Mode.) Move the nodes so that it resembles an "X". It doesn't have to be uniform or exactly like mines.

2. Once you've created your shape, press O to activate the Object Selection Tool. Place your cursor over any corner, then hold down the right mouse button. Resize your shape to fit the canvas.

Note: Before you go on, you may now want to clear the History palette by pressing the "Empty Command History" button found on the palette.

Note: It is important that you do the following step EXACTLY, without any extra commands or using Undo.

Duplicate the current layer. In the Layer palette, press the plus sign on the topmost layer. Next, click the Object below the expanded layer to make it active.

Now, press V to activate the Pen Tool, then Ctrl+A to Select All the nodes.

In the Tool Options palette, click the Transformtion Type button, and choose Rotate. Enter 10 for the Rotation Angle, then press Apply (the button to the right, not left). Next, change the Transformation Type to Contract. Enter 10 for both Contraction X and Contraction Y, then press Apply.

3. In the History palette, highlight your last five commands (Contract, Rotate, Select All, Selection Update, and Duplicate Layer). Press the "Save Quickscript" found on the palette. Now, press the "Run Quickscript" button. Press it as many times as you want, but do it slowly. Your shape should begin to rotate and become smaller.

That's it! Now that you've got it saved as a Quickscript, try running it on different shapes.
